Fund raising has taken a lot longer than we thought it would, so we are psudeo-settling in Hampton Roads, Virginia. We are getting involved with refugee and immigration services in Hampton, and we'll be teaching English classes two nights a week soon:) Becky has just started a temporary job at H&R Block that will take her through the end of April. I am looking for a job as well.

We got to spend New Years with Dave and Megan! We had a few days off as we transitioned from teaching into the new positions, but it was good to get back to work. We spent the day planning and organizing for the short term team that is coming down from Jeff and Julie's church this Thursday. I didn't take any pictures... BUT I do have some pictures of a few other things :) Here thet are, going from oldest to newest pictures and information...

A few weeks ago, we got to take Carla Patricia's mom to go see her! Carla has been staying in a home for extended care, close to a hospital. She is getting medical attention and plenty of food. She is doing much better! She was laughing and playing during her visit. Please continue to pray for her as the road to recovery from severe malnutrition is a long and dangerous one. It seems simple, right? Just give kids like that food! But it is actually a much more complicated process, as we are finding out.

Jeff and Carla Patricia

Julie and Becky play with one of the other girls at the home

Carla talks with her mom and brother

The Lighthouse Christian Bilingual School proudly graduated 11 seniors on Friday, June 5th. (What ability!)Since living here, where we have to walk to the grocery store (sometimes in blinding heat) we’ve become really skilled at “foraging.” We can scan the contents in the fridge and come up with a creative way of combining them together. For example, last night we scanned the fridge to find: onion, cabbage, carrot, and some various sauces (sometimes, the fridge is emptier than others…). Hmm…. We thought… what shall we do? Immediately we decided on a cabbage stir-fry, similar to my mom’s. Dave cut up all the veggies and we had started stir-frying when Dave discovered that the soy sauce had molded. (Yes, when you live in Honduras, not only can you get sunburned when it’s raining, anything that doesn’t move can and will mold.) What to do now!?! So we looked though our other sauces and found an asian sesame dressing. Perfect! When it was all done, we had bowls of sesame-cabbage stir-fry, but it was incomplete. After a bite or two, I thought, this tastes like the inside of an egg roll! Then we came up with it – a deconstructed egg roll! We fried some flour tortillas in oil and ate our “filling” on them! Delicious and easy!

It’s too bad I don’t have a photo; sometimes we don’t realize our personal genius until it’s too late… :)

(haha, when I originally typed this, I misspelled “genius”… how fitting!)

We love you all!Dave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524692280385033002.post-64985335478975597632009-05-30T13:25:00.003-04:002009-05-30T13:31:08.575-04:00Earthquake!Well friends, we have officially survived our first real earthquake!!! It was pretty scary, the house was rocking and rolling quite a bit and it really did seem to last for a looong time (though it was probably about 30-40 seconds). We were a little scared, but God is good and not one thing fell and we never lost power! We were really surprised about that especially since it was CRAZY shaking! Also, we were surprised that it was all so quiet. In movies, you hear screaming and crashing, and creaking and cracking, etc. This was pretty strong shaking, but hardly any noise! Not even the neighborhood dogs were barking! And the rumbling noise wasn't very loud at all! All the next day there were aftershocks and even the next night I woke up at 11ish when the house shook again from a milder shock! According to the USGS website map-thing, what we felt here was around a 5.5ish quake! Anyway, it was exciting and scary and I thought I'd share it with you guys!Dave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524692280385033002.post-28894469317250739222009-05-23T19:52:00.026-04:002009-05-30T13:34:07.454-04:00An end and a new beginning!HELLO EVERYONE!

A lot has happened in the past couple months! We are almost at the end of the school year! We have only one more day of exams, and then a "celebration day" left with the students. Then we have a week or so of teacher work days and the senior graduation. We are excited about the close of this year and the things God is preparing for us to do this next year. Here is an exerpt from the support letter we are sending out with details on what we will be doing:

Two close missionary friends of ours, Pastor Jeff Hines and his wife, are starting a community transformation project in a community outside of La Ceiba called Las Delicias. The people there are living in what would make most people shudder. No water, no electricity, no floor, some even with no beds or outhouses. Rather than live, they work to survive. The first time we went with them, as the Lord was quickening our hearts to help with making a difference in these people’s lives, Julie told us that they had been praying we would do just that. Specifically they need a photographer and someone to help coordinate short-term missionary teams, two positions that could have been hand-crafted for us. As God continued to give confirmation after confirmation, we became fully convinced that He wanted us to set aside something good (teaching in Rio Viejo) in order to know something better!

The first project is the installation of a well that will pump purified water. After that, as a team we will be building community showers and sinks, outhouses for the homes that don’t have them, a community center, a playground, and a day-care center. God willing, there will also be a home (down the mountain in a neighboring community) where kids in the worst situations (either from more extreme poverty or abuse) can stay for one month intervals until their situation at home improves. Until we raise all of our support we will be house-parents there, then training the people who will take over after we get our funding.

The girl on the left is named Carla Patricia, and she is one of the sickest children we have seen up there. The community is in a remote area just outside the city. They don't have any electricity or running water. In fact, because the community is on a very steep hill, the nearest water is in the river down below and so they would have to walk about 2 km uphill to carry the water back. What water they do bring back isn't clean either, so many of the kids have worms and other parasites; diarrhea being quite commonplace.

The project would include digging a well with a purification system to provide clean water, building a community center that would serve several purposing including public health education and preventative medical treatments, and possibly even a child care center that would allow single parents to go into town to earn money to support their families.

Below are some pictures to give you an idea of the lifestyles of the people who live there, a picture says a thousand words!

This is one of the families that Jeff and Julie are working with. We are preparing for quarter exams as well as the trip back home. Everything seems to be working out wonderfully!

We had a semi-emergency – even though the rainy season is winding down, a bog storm came by and dumped a ton of rain on us. Places in the city that don’t normally flood were flooded and some houses were even underwater. Being on the 2nd story, we never really have to worry about it, but many others are affected. Remember them in your prayers and also pray for some new/improved infrastructure so that in the future, rains aren’t as devastating as they currently are.

Also, I (Becky) had a great opportunity to minister to one of my students the other day. She is often picked on and struggles with insecurity (sound familiar??). I was able to tell her a bit about how it was for me growing up and reassure her that God does, indeed, love her and that it gets better! It’s pretty cool to finally see at least one good thing come out of the trash that was my life in 7th grade!

We’re going to Florida for Christmas!!! Yay for seeing family and getting a break! We need it! We should be going out on the boat and everything, which would be awesome. We’re so grateful to my Mom and Paul for helping us out and giving us a place to stay!

Well, God bless you all and in case we don’t blog again until afterwards…

Dave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524692280385033002.post-26814242945256193582008-12-08T20:42:00.002-05:002008-12-08T21:09:20.570-05:00The bread of idleness....Proverbs 31 is a well-known chapter that describes a woman that very few of us can live up to. Reading through the list of her achievements and accomplishments can make a modern-day woman feel dizzy! When we read through it recently as part of my women's Bible study, one particular part specifically stuck out - "She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her; 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.'" (Prov 31:27-29)

Now, mind you, I would never have considered my life to be "idle;" when you're a teacher, there is always work to be found. Between classes, planning, grading, etc I feel like there's never a spare moment! I certainly don't have time to exercise! And those dishes will just have to wait until tomorrow! I have too much to do!...
I do, however, manage to catch a chunk (read - 3 episodes) of Law and Order on TNT and yes, I did manage to watch some House after dinner.... but that's different... I'm just "unwinding!" Then why did I feel so darn convicted???

While I do consider true unwinding to be a legitimate (and often NECESSARY!) activity, it certainly shouldn't be a past-time! And I started to realize that I was, indeed, eating the "bread of idleness."

Since my "breakthrough," I have been trying much harder to choose the right thing. I may be tired when I come home, but I'm not 12 anymore and if I don't do those dishes, they won't magically do themselves, they'll just smell worse the next day! If I don't get into the habit of exercising now, it certainly won't get easier or more productive in 3 years! And, if I don't make time for God now, how can I expect to have the faith to fall back on when life gets really tough. It's not fair for me to watch tv when I haven't even given a shout-out to my Lord!

As a result of my efforts, I have noticed three things: (1) My house is much, much cleaner (Mom, you would be so proud!), also (2) my husband is appreciative. He has always been very, very helpful around the house but lately since he's seen how much more I've stepped it up, he's even more apt to wash some dishes or sweep without me even asking. Finally, and most importantly, (3) I feel great about myself! Knowing that in this area I am really, excuse-free, doing my all keeps me free from any guilt I might have felt. Even when someone catches me off-guard when we had an extra busy night and the house is a little messy, I have no guilt because I have confidence in the fact that I am doing all that I need to.

Now, that's a good feeling! Well, Ms. Proverbs 31, I have yet to come close to attaining your standard, but it feels good to make some progress!Dave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524692280385033002.post-8339780676974628702008-12-05T22:12:00.004-05:002008-12-05T22:18:24.818-05:00

This is just something funny -

Often when you buy something here at the grocery store, there is something random taped to it. The 2008/2009 school is in full swing and with that comes the hustle and bustle that every school year brings. We didn’t, however, want to keep neglecting to share our Honduran experiences with you all! This year has already brought its share of difficulties, but it has been much more marked by amazing blessings and spiritual growth for both Dave and I!

I (Becky) have been staying up with my Bible study and it has kept growing! Seeing such a dedicated group of women keep meeting once a week for encouragement, conviction J, and fellowship has been incredible! God has taught me a lot in the past year and a half, and much of it through trials! He has helped me see some of the areas I really need to work on as well as some of the things I have overcome! Glory to God! Continually He has made known that the key to teaching (and life!) lies in self-control and this season of my life can thus be referred to as “Becky learns to control her psycho emotions!” haha!

Dave has been able to start a small study too, with a couple of his friends here. He has even branched out way more than me – his fellow guys are all Honduran! J It has been a huge support and outlet for him; a good source of some pure-guy testosterone time too!

Thanks to all of you who are continually supporting us in prayer! You are a huge source of strength for us!

At the school, we have had some great chances to work with the students and develop new relationships and deepen the ones from last year. Our friendships with our coworkers grow stronger and stronger, and we know it will be difficult to leave whenever the Lord calls us away!

We are spending much time with the new Missionary teacher, Melissa, she’s new to Honduras, but been a teacher for 10 years. It has been a lot of fun. She isn’t a replacement Liza (we miss you chica!!!) but we love her in a different (calmer!) way just as much!

I have also been able to get a girls’ Bible study started during the Sunday school time before the church service on Sundays. It has already been a blessing to me, and I’m trying to trust God in it. Attendance has been a bit shaky at times, largely due to the fact that we’re smack in the middle of the rainy season, but I’m hoping for a resurgence, God willing, as the rains begin to wane.

Some of the events we’ve had recently include:
· A missions trip to Belfate to build a church and talk to some of the community about Christ
· A thanksgiving dinner at Erin’s house – there were 17 people there (!) and the food was phenomenal!

· A thanksgiving contest at the school (And my 8th grade homeroom won!!!)
· A thanksgiving lunch with all the students – over 100!

· We LEARNED HOW to make sopa marinera (our favorite seafood soup, maybe favorite food!) at Jackie’s house with Jaime and their families
· A Christmas door decorating contest (we won 2nd place, but should have gotten 1st!!!)
· Nuvia’s wedding!!! The students broke into groups and made armor out of cardboard and mailing tape. The results were pretty impressive! Then Dave gathered them again to talk about the ways that God has protected His kids!
· And we’re coming home for Christmas (well, by “home” we mean the US, we’ll be in Florida with my mom – thanks for the tickets mom!)
We love and miss you all!! Good grief! OK, so after the last post it was more of the same. Teach, teach, grade, sleep, teach, grade, make a test, teach, eat. You know – that whole teacher-always-working thing. We helped plan the first ever “Fun Day” (field day) at TLCBS which was a ton of fun. I think my favorite event to watch was the Dizzy Bat Race, with kids falling over and all, but it was all awesome! Here are some of the select pictures.

Marietta had us over again for sopa marinera, which is DELICIOUS seafood soup with fish, conch, lobster, crab, and some times shrimp. We were lucky enough to be invited to a couple of places with some good friends. First we went with Megan and David and their kids Andrew and Adrianna and Sun (the new missionary) to Trujillo, a town to the east. It’s the site of an old fort (see photos) and some amazing beaches. The actual beach was in the shape of a crescent moon and we got to drive around just about all of it. In one part, near the town, the sand is really coarse but on the other part, where we went the second day, it’s much finer. In fact, that second day was idyllic. After practically off-roading for a bit, we arrived upon a stretch of beach that we shared with no one. There was no one as far as the eye could see. The water was warm and wonderful and the waves were just right, not too big but not too small. On the way back we stopped for lunch in Tela at a yummy restaurant that had a PAPER TOWEL DISPENSER – and it had PAPER TOWELS!!!!! I know, I know, I was blown away too! I’m so used to having to have toilet paper or at least an old receipt in my purse because bathrooms here don’t tend to always have tp, much less soap or anything. I haven’t seen paper towels the whole time I’ve been here! It reminded me so much of the States I actually felt homesick! Anyway… Here are the pictures!

After that little mini vacation, we were invited up to Rio Viejo (means “Old River”) to spend some time with Jason and Sara (they live there and are currently building an orphanage on some recently bought property). In the meantime she’s living with Liza and teaching at TLCBS.) but it ended up being a whole ton of people (seems to be the way people do things here!) and a whole ton of food! Thankfully everyone was ok, but they were too close for comfort. Rachel, I love you!

For lack of a more graceful way of putting it, Dave’s parent’s house burned down. They lost just about everything, including their three cats. They even lost their station wagon that was parked in the garage. Your prayers for all are greatly appreciated.

My Papa is also having some somewhat serious leg problems, so please be praying for healing for him. I (Becky) also have bronchitis, but thanks to some medicine and a lovely shot in the butt, it’s getting better (and the doctor, who is the mother of one of our students, didn’t charge us a thing, Praise God!)

Ok, I think that just about catches you all up. It’s been a week of highs and low lows, but we’re glad to share that it’s going to be ok and we’re grateful for all of you out there. There were people singing, dancing, and sharing what the Lord has done in their lives (since 2007 was the Year of the Harvest). We had an amazing dinner and got to spend some more time with the Pastor and his wife, since they had just gotten back from 3 months in the states 2 days ago. The best part, though, was after.

When everyone had left and we were cleaning a bit, we saw how much food was left and we decided to go downtown and give it to the hungry people there. At 2 am we went to them… most of the people we gave food to were drug addicts, thin from lack of food, they spent all their money on drugs. Prostitutes smelling of alcohol, one pregnant… some kids… but the Lord was there! We were able to minister to them, give them food, and pray over them. They were so grateful we felt so blessed to be there and to be able to serve them in that way. Pastor Ricky says that the church will try to do this more often this year, maybe once a week. We want to see these people turn their lives around and go after something much greater than chasing after their next high! Please pray that we can see fruit in this ministry and that lives may be redeemed! Dave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524692280385033002.post-61833009211853639412007-12-18T19:02:00.000-05:002007-12-18T19:23:12.029-05:00One week til Christmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!! It was adorable!!!!! The idea was that a little mouse family was telling the story of an American family and a Jewish family in Israel. At the end, the son of the Jewish family has to go to war, and they focus on the thought that no matter who you are or where you’re from, when you’re in war all you want is to go home. The message was for us to be grateful for what we have and to remember that though we’re fortunate enough to spend our Christmas with our friends and family, not everyone is. They showed a slideshow with some photos from Colombia, Iraq, and the Sudan reminding us to keep ourselves in prayer and to help those less fortunate than us.

(PS – if you would like to help a refugee from Sudan get to the States, you can send money to a World Harvest Church, http://www.rodparsley.com/, and he brings them over, but I think that time is running out because the Sudanese government is enacting legislation to prevent the refugees from leaving…)

Below are some of the photos from the play and there are many, many more on Dave’s website: http://community.webshots.com/user/virginiatechdave<br I almost forgot how to type, it’s been so long since we’ve posted!!! MUCH has happened, so I’ll try and tell you about it, though it may not be in chronological order…

We spent a wonderful honeymoon at a resort on the beach called Helen’s. We took the bus to Sambo Creek (a Garifunas village where life is not the same as in the big city...) and then walked to the beach out front of a hotel called Helen's. (Which, by the way, is where we'll stay for a few nights if you come visit us beacause it's ON the beach, beautiful and around $25 a night for a 2 person room!) We got in the water and played in the sand, only being asked for money by a weird guy once! :)

We were in the water, honing our football skills by throwing a coconut back and forth, when all of a sudden, Dave felt a sharp sting. We ran, terrified, to shore to figure out that he was stung by a jellyfish! It swelled a bit and turned red, but apparently (according to the staff at the hotel) there are no secondary effects... The swelling subsided and the pain went away and all was good as new. We ate lunch and hung around for a while longer. Then, around 3pm we went home.

(This is an old photo of a nearby beach. Turns out if you're a gringo/gringa and you don't use sunscreen you will get burned EVEN IF IT'S RAINING! heh... we certainly learned our lesson. From now on, I'm wearing sunscreen to bed! We've been showing our love for each other by applying aloe and lotion to each other's backs. What devotion!

We love and miss you all, but GOD IS GOOD and He is blessing us left and right here! It has certainly been a while since we’ve posted. It seems like every time there is time, there is no internet! But all that should change soon, Dave and I are going to use this next paycheck (Tuesday) to get cable and internet! Which means we should be able to post from home AND if all goes well (God willing!) we should have an internet phone up and running in the next week or 2… we finally unlocked our cell phones from the states, and the number is : 33-66-80-45, keep in mind 2 things-
1) you would need to affix a code for Honduras in front in order to call and I don’t know what that number is, but you should be able to find it…
2) It will cost you a fortune to call… if you can wait, please just wait until we get the phone and that way you are saving money.
Right now we are in the middle of a 4-day weekend. Friday was off in order to celebrate the Independence Day (Sept. 15th) and Monday for Teacher’s Day. Honduras has a lot of holidays, they know where it’s at!

A new missionary teacher has arrived. Her name is Elizah and she is from California. She understands a lot of Spanish, but doesn’t speak as well… yet! She will undoubtedly learn very quickly and blow Dave and I out of the water. She’s very sweet and we’re glad to have the company (she lives right next door to us!)

Friday we went to the Quince party of one of our students. Here, rather than celebrate the sweet sixteen, they commemorate the 15th birthday. Yes, I said “commemorate.” Please believe me when I say that this “party” was more impressive than our wedding! She was beautiful and had 15 “maids” (her friends in what looked like bridesmaid dresses) paired off with equally impressive guys in tuxes. She danced with her father, sang, and then there was a performance by Castillo del Rey, a human-video group at the church. After all that was the catered dinner and the cutting of the cake. It was just like a wedding, without the groom. There was even a cake topper on top of the cake of a girl in a white dress! It was awesome to be a part of and to see our students all dressed up and having fun outside of classes.

Saturday was the Independence Day parade in Centro (downtown). There were a bunch of marching bands from different high schools in the area and tons of people. We walked around for a bit, accidentally drank the “purified” water brand that we were warned not to drink, bought and ate some lychees, and had a really good time. Dave was even “interviewed” on a radio program in Tegucigalpa. A man walked up to him and started asking him how was the parade, etc. Keep in mind that our Spanish comprehension is minimal and our ability to speak is equal. Dave managed to convey that he was from Florida and the parade was very good. :)

We love you alllllll and we love reading your comments, so keep ‘em coming!
Love,
Dave and Becky
Dave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524692280385033002.post-90148519587854268252007-09-04T15:13:00.000-04:002007-09-04T15:19:49.142-04:00Felix...So, apparently with Dean, we hadn't seen our last hurricane here in Honduras... this time the hurricane is coming much closer and it's worse, but we're safe. We are staying with Pastor Ken's wife and 3 kids part to be connected and part to help her out since Pastor Ken is away on Costa Rica for language school. We had a close call as the roof/patio was flooding and we were worried that the water would start pouring down the stairs into the living room. Griselda and I were bailing water while David found the clog in the pipe... to make a long story short, we were able to drain the water and then the rain slowed a lot. At this moment, the rain is very slow and there is little or no wind. It shouldn't be too bad, so don't worry about us! The kitties and we are safe, sound, and even dry! Praise be to God!!! I don't know exactly what to expect from the storm from this point forward, but if it gets worse we'll let you know! We love you and miss you and hope that you're all doing well!
love, Dave and BeckyDave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524692280385033002.post-25996204929836629412007-08-28T18:26:00.000-04:002007-08-28T19:11:36.870-04:00Strike!Hello to all!

Becky and I are still doing well! There is a huge strike right now in Honduras, a lot of people are unhappy with the government or wages and are picketing. We are safe where we are, but some people that live near the airport could not get to school yesterday because picketers had blocked the bridge. Also, Pastor Ken could not leave for Costa Rica because the bus drivers were on strike and he was supposed to leave Monday morning on a bus. It is much better than we initially heard, though! At first we heard that the water and power companies would probably strike as well so we would be without running water and electricity, but that did not happen. Hooray for electricity! From what we hear, it will all be over within a few days.

The kitties were having a little trouble adjusting to the heat (it gets up to about 90 here every day). So guess what we did? WE CUT THEIR HAIR! They look pretty funny. Becky says they are ugly, but I don't think so. They are doing much better now. They are running around and playing more, especially in the evenings, when it is a little cooler. Pictures are coming, I left them at home. We will probably try to save up for an air conditioner for the spring, when it is supposed to be the hottest here.

Happy Birthday to Becky!!! We stayed home Sunday, Becky wanted to cook a Honduran recipe. She made a dish with chicken in coconut milk, it was delicious! The only downside is that the jalapenos in it made her hands burn from cutting them and my hands burn from doing the dishes. They aren't that hot in the states!

I need to get a crown done here... I should really set up an appointment soon. Apparently, I had ANOTHER tooth that needed a root canal (I hate my teeth). I found out right before we left for Honduras. The root canal was done last week, here in La Ceiba. It went pretty smoothly, but it hurt a bit more than the previous ones. The endodontist that I went to was very good; she goes to our church and is a member of the school board.

Last week, in addition to being the first week of school, was also the youth rally at the church. The youth had worked for a long time, preparing their own programs with skits, songs, and games. It made for one busy week, but it was very good. Our next door neighbor, Carly, wanted to go with us to the rally, so she came Thursday and Saturday. Our neighbors are very nice, we like them a lot! They also speak beautiful English, which is a huge blessing in many ways.

School is going pretty well, we have a lot more planning periods that we ever did in Florida, but there is a lot more here to do. We help out in a lot of ways around here. We fix computers a lot. We also proofread tests, quizzes, and handouts that other teachers are printing. Yesterday we helped Lourdes and Pastor Corona move their offices. Also I have 4 labs to prepare for, yikes! We also have to write our own tests and quizzes, which I am finding out is kind of annoying. Compared to last year, I have a lot less students, but Becky has more. I feel very disorganized at this moment. We have so very little free time! I want to organize, but have too many other things to do. Things will settle down, but pray that we use our time wisely and make the most of the work time that we have. It will get better, I am trusting in God!Dave and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03923667241489341119noreply@blogger.com4
